What happens to New York’s Bryant Park when summer comes to an end, and it’s too cold to bask in the sun at lunch-time with a sandwich and a bottle of beer? When it’s no longer possible to sunbathe on the grassy lawn behind the New York Public Library, what is there to do?
What indeed?
Would you believe an ice-skating "pond" and several rows of "mini-shops" peddling Christmas gifts and ornaments? Would you believe that people still flock to this little park in mid-town Manhattan, but with cups of steaming coffee instead of bottles of ice-cold soda and beer?
I have to admit that it’s not something I anticipated, when I arrived here in the middle of the afternoon a couple days ago, hoping that I might find something interesting to photograph during an hour’s free time before a meeting over on Fifth Avenue. I’ve photographed Bryant Park in every season over the past 40 years (click here to see a collection of seven Flickr sets of such photos), and have seen everything from anti-war Vietnam protesters to musicians, chess players, and sunbathers … but never ice-skaters. I’ve seen the park taken over for rock concerts and Fashion Week shows, but the dozens of Christmas-season shops were somewhat of a surprise.
But if I continue coming back to the park from time to time, as I suspect I will, there will probably be more surprises in the days ahead. Meanwhile, these photos will give you an interesting glimpse of the many ways in which New York City uses its parks to good advantage…
